A team from the United Nations Capital Development Fund, through its LoCAL Climate Adaptive Living Facility, as part of its programme aimed at promoting Green and Climate Resilient Local Economies in Ghana paid a working visit to the Effutu Municipal Assembly on Thursday, February 8, 2024 to among other things hold a round- table meeting with the leadership of the Assembly as well as visit potential project sites to validate activities listed in the Assembly’s workplan.
The visit also allowed for the team to identify gaps and good practices in the process of the development of the workplan with engagement of beneficiaries at Nsuekyir, the community selected for the siting of the storage facility of the project.
The Effutu Municipal Development Planning Officer, Mr. Abubakar Saddique Adam enumerated the innovative planned programmes and activities which included the construction of a storage facility at Nsuekyir to reduce waste and preserve the produce of the farmers.
He touched on training and sensitization programmes for farmers on circular economy and climate smart agricultural principles as well as providing an alternative source of income with training seminars on soap making for the people in the communities.
The Country Director for the United Nations Capital Development Fund, Madam Angela Yayra Quashie, advised the Assembly to compile a trusted data of beneficiary farmers of the training programmes for easy tracking.
To reduce wastage in the system, Madam Quashie urged the Assembly to focus on promoting the usage of farm produce and bi-products such as cocoa pod and plantain husk for the soap production.
On his part the Effutu Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Alhaji Zubairu Kassim assured the team that he would provide the needed assistance for a trusted source of data of farmers for the programme.
Touching on the importance of the programme, the Effutu MCE stressed on the need for using the bi-products of agricultural produce to create sources of livelihood for the local people.
Hon. Zubairu Kassim appealed to all the relevant stakeholders to help in linking the farmers to buyers to create markets to boost their income generation to positively affect the local economy.
