The Central Regional Minister and Chairman of the Regional Security Council (REGSEC), Hon. Ekow Panyin Okyere Eduamoah, has on Wednesday, September 2, 2026 called for calm and restraint following a violent land-related clash at New Winneba that claimed 3 lives and left 20 persons injured. The incident which occurred on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, reportedly involved persons from the Gomoa and Effutu areas over a land dispute. Out of the 20 injured persons, 12 have been discharged from the Trauma Hospital, while 8 remain on admission for further medical attention and investigations. Seven persons have also been arrested and are currently in police custody as investigations continue.The Regional Minister, Hon. Ekow Panyin Okyere Eduamoah, accompanied by the Central Regional Police Commander, DCOP Mr. George Bossman Ohene-Boadi, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Hon. Rev. Attah Mensah, the Winneba Divisional Police Commander, ACP Ibrahim Opoku, and other stakeholders, visited the Trauma Hospital to assess the condition of victims and engage with health officials attending to them. Hon. Ekow Panyin described the incident as unfortunate and expressed his condolences to the bereaved families. He commended the Ghana Police Service for its swift intervention, which he said helped to bring the situation under control and prevent further escalation. “Fortunately, the police were swift in taking action, for that reason, they were able to calm the situation down.”He appealed to all persons and groups affected by the incident to remain calm and refrain from any form of retaliation or taking the law into their own hands. He assured the affected communities that their grievances would be heard through the appropriate channels, while urging them to allow the police to conduct their investigations and take the necessary action. He further explained that the increased police presence in the community was based on the prevailing security situation and should not be a source of fear for law-abiding residents. He encouraged residents to continue with their normal activities and cooperate with security personnel, stressing that the police were in the area to protect lives and property. VISIT TO NEW WINNEBA POLICE STATION Following the visit to the hospital, the delegation proceeded to the New Winneba Police Station, where the incident occurred, to assess the security situation and engage with authorities handling the issue. Hon. Ekow commended the security personnel for their prompt response and urged them to continue carrying out their duties professionally. He further stressed the need for the ongoing matter to remain in the hands of the security agencies without interference from other sources, particularly as investigations are underway. Hon. Ekow Panyin reiterated his appeal for calm and peaceful coexistence among the affected communities, urging them to exercise restraint and allow due process to take its course. He assured the general public that the Regional Security Council ( REGSEC) would continue to monitor situation and work with the relevant stakeholders to maintain peace, and protect lives and property. As investigations continue, the seven arrested persons remain in police custody, while the eight injured persons continue to receive medical care. The authorities have consequently called on residents of Effutu and Gomoa to remain calm, cooperate with the security agencies and avoid actions or statements that could further heighten tensions.
