The University of Education, Winneba (UEW), on Friday, April 21, 2023 swore in its second Chancellor, Nenyi Ghartey VII, in a memorable ceremony attended by the President of the Republic of Ghana and many other high profile dignitaries from various parts of the country.
Nenyi Ghartey VII, the Paramount Chief of the Effutu Traditional Area until his appointment served on two separate occasions as a member of the University Governing Council and has contributed in diverse ways towards the development of the University as one of the best in the country currently.
Speaking at the investiture of the second Chancellor of the University, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, reiterated his government’s commitment at supporting universities in the country in the pursuit of striving hard to produce a strong human resource base for the country. He said his government was dedicated to the growth of Universities in the country and will ensure that UEW fulfills its mandate of being the premier Teacher Training University dedicated to producing more graduate teachers for the country to drive her development.
The President said he was confident that the mark of trust reposed in the new Chancellor by the University community would not be broken, bearing in mind his wealth of experience as a traditional leader and educationist who has also served Ghana very well in his days as a Civil Servant.
In his maiden address, the new Chancellor, Nenyi Ghartey VII, who succeeded Alhaji Asumah Banda praised his predecessor for his sterling leadership and contribution during his days as Chancellor of the University towards moving the University to its current “enviable state” and pledged to build on that foundation with due diligence and support from all stakeholders.
Nenyi Ghartey VII called on both internal and external stakeholders of the University to put UEW first and work together as a family to forge ahead to develop the University as well as achieve its target of becoming the best Teacher Training University in the whole of Africa.
He encouraged them to actively participate in and contribute to decision-making processes, and have an ownership orientation towards the University’s resources.
Nana Ofori Ansah, Chairman of the UEW Governing Council, said the ceremonial role conferred on the new Chancellor required a collaborative effort coupled with a sense of renewed mindset of all to drive the overall strategy, growth and development of the University under the guidance of the University Council.
The colourful ceremony was attended by over 1,000 people, comprising the Deputy Majority leader of Parliament and MP for Effutu, Hon. Alexander Afenyo- Markin, Ministers of state and Government officials with the active participation of the Effutu Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Alhaji Zubairu Kassim, traditional rulers from all parts of the country, representatives from businesses, contractors, friends and well-wishers, as well as members of the internal UEW community.
