35YEAR OLD FORMER TEACHER WINS BEST FARMER IN EFFUTU

A 35year old former teacher, Samuel Sarfo, has been adjudged the overall Best Farmer at the 38th National Farmers Day Celebration in the Effutu Municipality at an event held at Gyangyanadze, a community near Winneba.

The event held on Friday December 2, 2022 under the theme “Accelerating Agricultural Development through Value Addition” brought several people mostly farmers who thronged the durbar grounds together to celebrate the gallant farmers in the Municipality for the selfless efforts at ensuring food security in the area and the country as a whole.

Delivering the Keynote Address the Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Alhaji Zubairu Kassim extolled all the farmers in the Municipality for continuously going through struggles to produce and harvest to sustain the growing population and charged them to employ modern agricultural practices to increase their yield thereby sustaining agriculture as the main driver of the country’s economy.

Hon. Zubairu Kassim reiterated government’s commitment at pursuing policies targeted at making farming and fishing more lucrative to attract more youth to venture into agriculture to reduce unemployment as well as ensuring food security for the nation.

Touching on the theme for the celebration, the Municipal Chief Executive noted that Ghana was moving away from the primary benefit of agricultural production to a new era with the view of boosting the country’s gross national product through sustainable agricultural methods.

Hon. Zubairu Kassim, bemoaned the spate at which farmlands were being lost to estate developers and free-range cattle ranchers threatening the future of agriculture in the Municipality. He appealed to the traditional authorities and other relevant state institutions to reserve and protect lands for agricultural gains to cater for the future generation.

The Municipal Director of Agriculture, Madam. Peace Fomenya reaffirmed her department’s readiness to collaborate with all stakeholders in the Agricultural sector for a fruitful outcome. She also assured the farmers that her outfit will continue to support them in improving their yield.

Madam. Fomenya advised the youth in the municipality to take advantage of government’s flagship programmes including the “Planting for Food and Jobs” to better their lives.

In all 14 farmers and fisher folks were awarded in different categories with 35 year old, Samuel Sarfo who doubles as the Managing Director of NAS Farmers located at Atietu being decorated as Effutu Municipality’s Overall Best Farmer for the 2022 Farming Season.
