Final Year students of the Department of Clothing and Textiles Education within the Faculty of Home Economics Education at the University of Education, Winneba, on Thursday October 13, 2022 thrilled a gathered crowd at the Jophus Anamoah Mensah Hall to an exciting cat-walking amidst entertainment during the Customary Fashion Show as part of their examination requirement.
The students who majored in Professional Techniques in Clothing Construction held the fashion with elegant modelling displays of formal wear, evening gowns, cocktail dresses, bride’s maids/ groom’s men and bridal gowns/groom suits sewed by themselves.
The Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Alhaji Zubairu Kassim, who stood in for the Member of Parliament for the Effutu Constituency, Hon. Alexander Afenyo- Markin, applauded the students and staff of the Department for their selflessness, dedication and commitment towards teaching and learning of the skill of sewing professional dresses that could compete at all levels.
He said that showcasing what the students had produced to the world gives credence to the relevance of the Home Economics Faculty under which the Department falls in the university. He commended the Lecturers for guiding the students to sharpen their skills, talents and creativity to acquire employable skills needed to cause changes in their lives after their university education.
Hon. Zubairu Kassim, whiles recognizing the need for individuals to be empowered through decent jobs to shore up economic growth, called for them to be supported through social protection as well as giving voices and granting audience to the poor and marginalized in the society.
He said that productive employment and decent work were crucial for attaining equitable globalization and poverty reduction, adding that productive employment is predicted on skills acquisition through education.
Towards ensuring better prospects for personal development, social integration to create the platform to contribute in achieving the Sustainable Development Goal 8, technical and vocational career- oriented education like fashion and textiles are expected to equip students with key skills and knowledge needed to make them employable.
A Senior Lecturer with the Department, Dr. Rosemary Quarcoo, expressed the gratitude of the University to the Effutu Municipal Assembly for the continuous support aimed at ensuring an environment of peace and full security needed to advance the course of higher education in Winneba.
He noted that the University would continue to produce graduates with unique skills needed to boost the fashion and textiles industry and the economy of the country as whole.
