EFFUTU MUNICIPAL ASSEMBLY SUPPORTS 15 PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES

Items worth GHc 89,763.00 have been distributed by the Effutu Municipal Assembly to 15 Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) to support their business operations.       

The items were procured from the Municipality’s share of the Disability Fund, which is dedicated to providing financial assistance to empower Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) to undertake sustainable economic ventures as well as making them financially independent to help improve their living conditions.     

The items included roofing and metal sheets, Deep Freezer Refrigerators, Cement, Canopies, Steel Containers for shops, Ice Chests Freezers, assorted provisions and Cartons of Frozen Fish.        

The beneficiaries were made up of people with physical challenges, hearing and speech impaired, visually impaired, intellectually challenged and those with multiple disabilities.     

At a ceremony to present the items, the Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Alhaji Zubairu Kassim, said the beneficiaries were selected based on the approved criteria and guidelines of the Department of Social Welfare. 

He advised the beneficiaries to take proper care of the items and invest them into productive ventures to help uplift their standards of living and welfare.   

Hon. Zubairu Kassim, charged the Department of Social Welfare to conduct routine monitoring to ensure that the beneficiaries used the items for the purposes for which they were granted. 

He spoke against the practice where people with disabilities were marginalized and segregated in the society because of their deformities and appealed to all to embrace and offer all forms of support needed by PWDs to aid them enjoy life same as their counterparts with full abilities.     

Madam Phoebi Agyei, the Municipal Director for the Department of Social Welfare, advised the beneficiaries not to sell the items, but to use them to enhance their businesses and living standards.   

She lauded the Assembly for the support and urged those who were on the waiting list to be patient as they would be captured in subsequent purchases for PWDs in the Municipality.     

Mr Gabriel Akpadie, the President of the Association for the Deaf in the Effutu Municipality who spoke on behalf of members of the Ghana Federation of Persons with Disability (GFPD), commended the Assembly and government for the continuous support.     

Sharing his personal experience as a beneficiary with his colleagues, he charged them to place premium on the items given them to make themselves relevant in the societies they find themselves.
