EFFUTU MUNICIPAL ASSEMBLY JOINS GREEN GHANA PROJECT

The Municipal Coordinating Director for the Effutu Municipal Asseembly, Mr. Francis Asiedu acting on behalf of the Municipal Chief Executive Hon. Alhaji Zubairu Kassim, has led the people of Winneba in a tree planting exercise under the Green Ghana Project.

In an address to launch the Green Ghana Project at the Akosua Village, a suburb of Winneba to kick start the nationwide exercise, Mr. Asiedu said the target, this year, is to plant thirty thousand (30,000) trees within the Municipality.

As part of efforts at an aggressive afforestation and reforestation of the entire country, the Green Ghana Project was launched, last year, by the President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo to   restore the lost forest cover of the country and contribute to global efforts against climate change.

Enumerating the importance of forests to climate action, the Municipal Coordinating Director said nature-based solutions provide a quick means to halting climate change, with global warming projected to reach 3.2 degrees Celsius if no action is taken. He commended the Government for the Green Ghana Project which aims at aggressively restoring Ghana to its forest nature adding that due to the importance Government attaches to the Green Ghana Project, the Assembly will continue to collaborate other relevant institutions and stakeholders to protect and manage the forest and wildlife resources of the Municipality.

On the Tree Planting Project Mr. Asiedu noted that about thirty thousand (30,000) trees are expected to be planted in the Effutu Municipality this year with strict monitoring to ensure the realization of the project.

When he took his turn, the Paramount Chief of the Effutu Traditional Area, Neenyi Ghartey VII, who co-launched the project with the Municipal Coordinating Director charged the youth of Winneba to take keen interest in the Tree Planting Exercise to enjoy the benefits of it in the future.

He praised the Nana Addo led administration for the initiative and warned that the Traditional Council will join forces with the Municipal Assembly to prosecute miscreants who will will cause destruction to the planted trees. He thanked all those who took part in the exercise to make it a success.

The tree planting exercise which took place at areas such as Akosua Village, Ntakofem and Low Cost Down brought together Assembly Members led by the Presiding Member, Hon. Elizabeth Sena, civil servants, members of the security services as well as members of the public who supported the planting of trees in the Municipality.
