About 15 persons with Disabilities (PWDs) within the Effutu Municipality on Tuesday, April 18, 2023, received various items from the Effutu Municipal Assembly (EMA) to boost their businesses as well as improve the livelihoods to be self-dependent and integrate well into the society.
The items included Fufu Making Machines, Deep Freezers, Ice Chests, Bags of Sugar, Bags of Rice, Soft Drinks, among others.
Hon. Alhaji Zubairu Kassim, Effutu Municipal Chief Executive presenting the items explained the funds for the purchases was disbursed from the Disability Fund, which formed part of the District Assemblies Common Fund.
Hon. Zubairu Kassim said that the Assembly in a move to ensuring that persons with disability were not left to their fate to adopt begging on the streets for survival begun engaging them to offer the support needed to make them self-reliant.
He noted that the Assembly had moved from the past practice of giving cash to beneficiaries to a new paradigm of providing them with the needed tools to work with to ensure they secure a good livelihood.
The Effutu Municipal Chief Executive intimated that the Assembly together with the Department of Social Welfare and Community Development identified doing business as the major need of the PWDs in the area and therefore decided to pay more attention to it.
According to him this was in line with the Government’s interest to empower Ghanaians, especially PWDs economically adding that investing in their businesses would help reduce poverty among them and also curb the tendency for them to beg on the streets to survive.
Hon. Zubairu Kassim encouraged the PWDs to use the items for the intended purpose to get their benefit and reinvest into the businesses.
