EMA INAUGURATES DISASTER MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE

An 11 – member Disaster Management Committee to assist the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) in fulfilment of section 27 of the NADMO Act 2016 (Act 927), has been inaugurated at the Effutu Municipal Assembly (EMA)

The committee’s Membership is made up of the MCE as Chairman, the Member of Parliament, the Municipal Director of NADMO, Municipal Director of Health Services, the Divisional Police Commander, the Municipal Fire Officer, the Municipal Director of Education and the Municipal Environmental Health Officer.

Other members include the Municipal Information Officer, the Municipal Planning Officer and the Municipal Social Development Officer.

The committee is mandated to among other things, implement government’s policy on disaster prevention, disaster risk reduction, climate risk management, prepare, coordinate, monitor and update disaster management plans as well as identify hazards and monitor the hazards.

 The Committee is also to collaborate with communities and relevant institutions through the dissemination of information to educate the public and facilitate the development of communities and community-based organizations, reconcile the difference in opinion and approach and resolve dispute arising from them as well as report on project progress.

In an Address read on his behalf by the Municipal Coordinating Director at the inaugural ceremony held at the Municipal Assembly Hall in Winneba, the Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Alhaji Zubairu Kassim, urged members of the committee to hold themselves in readiness to help prevent and manage disasters when they come their way by taking on the task whenever the need arises.

Hon. Zubairu Kassim admonished members of the committee to focus more on disaster prevention by prioritizing the assessment of Disaster prone structures (buildings) as well as buildings on water ways to ascertain their sustainability friendliness to forestall the occurrence of disasters in the Municipality.

On his part the Central Regional Director of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), Joseph Kwame Donkor, charged the Committee members to work in unity and harmony to plan effectively to deal with disaster related matters in the Effutu Municipality.

He noted that dealing with Disaster issues with some modicum of promptness is the surest way of the safety of the residents of Effutu.
